Getting started

How do I create a family?

Open the app and tap "Get started." You'll go through a short onboarding that asks for your name, the people in your household, and your color/emoji preferences. When you're done, you'll see a 6-character family code at the top of the Family screen. That code is how every other device in your household joins.

There are no email accounts or passwords required. The family code is your identity.

How does my partner join the same family?

On their phone, they install Our Life, tap "Join an existing family" on the welcome screen, and type the same 6-character family code. After they pick which member they are (e.g. "I'm Mom"), they'll see the same calendar, lists, recipes, and photos as everyone else — in real time, within ~200 ms.

Is there a web/desktop version?

Yes. Open ourlifeapp.ai in any modern browser and join with your family code. The desktop layout activates automatically on screens 1024 px and wider. You'll get a fuller multi-column view of Today, Calendar, Lists, Meals and the family album.

What does the iOS app do that the web version doesn't?

The native iOS app adds push notifications, native haptics, the iOS home-screen widget, optional Apple Watch complications, and a smoother native experience overall. Web works everywhere, but for the everyday family hub on iPhone, install the native app.

Family & members

How do I add or remove a family member?

Open the Family tab (the heart icon). Tap a member to edit their name, emoji, color, or role. Tap the + at the top to add a new member. To remove someone, open them, scroll to the bottom and tap "Remove member."

Anything that was assigned to a removed member is automatically re-attributed to "Everyone."

Can I add a member who isn't in our house? (Babysitter, grandparent, ex-spouse)

You have two cleaner options than adding them as a full family member:

  • Babysitter: use a Sitter share link — a read-only agenda for a specific night, with drive times and "leave by" estimates baked in. No app install required on their end. Mint one from Settings → Share Manager.
  • Grandparents / extended family: share a read-only week link from the same screen. They open it in any browser.

Adding them as a full member also works if they're going to actively contribute (a co-parent across two homes, for example) — just be aware they'll see the entire family doc.

How do "Kid View" and the chunkier UI work?

If you set a member's role to "Child" and they switch into their own profile (Settings → Switch profile), the app automatically:

  • Uses bigger touch targets and bouncier animations.
  • Hides AI features and the Lists shopping detail (so they can't reveal birthday surprises).
  • Shows confetti when they check off their chores or meals.
  • Locks Settings behind a parent toggle.

AI features

How does the AI photo-to-events feature work?

On the Today screen, tap the + button, then "Snap a photo." Point your camera at a school flyer, sports schedule, PDF calendar, or any document with dates. Our AI router (Claude Vision, two-pass for cost efficiency) reads it and proposes calendar entries, one per row.

You review them on a confirmation sheet — edit, reassign to a different family member, or delete any line — and tap "Add all" to bloom them onto your calendar.

What other AI features are there?
  • AI quick add — type or speak a sentence ("Soccer Tuesday at 4 at Berkeley High") and the app creates the event.
  • AI conflict detection — flags overlaps at compose time before they hit your calendar.
  • AI recipe suggestion — "Cook up something new" picks a recipe based on what's already in your meal plan and pantry.
  • AI weekly briefing — Sunday-morning chip on Today that summarizes the week ahead.
  • AI weekly digest — Sunday-evening push with thread summaries and "what we did this week."
Is there a limit on AI usage?

Yes — designed to protect both you and the service against runaway costs.

  • Free tier: 8 AI calls per month.
  • Plus tier: 100 AI calls per day (effectively unlimited for normal household use).

If you hit the cap, the AI features stay visible but show a clear "limit reached" message rather than failing silently.

Does the AI see my private family data?

Only the specific input you provide for each task. If you ask the AI to import a recipe URL, only the URL is sent. If you snap a school flyer, only that photo is sent. We never include your full family doc in any AI request.

Our AI provider (Anthropic) does not train models on API inputs. Full detail in our Privacy Policy.

Sharing

How do I share tonight's schedule with a babysitter?

Settings → Share ManagerSitter share. Pick the night, optionally pick which kids the sitter is watching, and tap "Generate link." Text the link to the sitter — they tap it on any phone and see a clean read-only view of the evening, including drive times to each event and a "leave by" countdown.

The link auto-expires the morning after. You can also rotate or revoke it manually at any time.

How do I share a shopping list with a relative?

Open the list. Tap the share icon at the top right and tap "Make this list shareable." A link is copied to your clipboard. Anyone with the link can check items off — no install required.

You can revoke the share at any time by tapping "Stop sharing" in the same place.

Are share links private?

Share links use unguessable random tokens (similar to a Google Doc "anyone with the link" share). They're not password-protected, so anyone who has the link can view what it points at. If you accidentally share one too broadly, rotate it from Share Manager — the old link becomes invalid immediately.

Calendars

Can I subscribe to my work / school calendar?

Yes — Settings → Imported calendars+ Add feed. Paste the ICS URL (Google Calendar, Outlook, Apple Calendar, school portals — anything that publishes an ICS feed). Events appear in your Our Life calendar tagged with the source.

Imports are read-only — we don't write back to your work calendar.

Can I export Our Life events to Apple/Google Calendar?

Yes. Settings → Calendar export → toggle on. We mint an ICS URL for your family. Add it as a calendar subscription in Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, or Outlook. New events sync within an hour.

What about full two-way Google Calendar sync?

Two-way Google Calendar sync is in late-stage preparation and will roll out post-launch once Google's OAuth verification clears. The one-way exports above (ICS subscribe + ICS publish) cover most use cases in the meantime.

How do I cancel my Plus subscription?

Subscriptions go through Apple's billing on iOS and Stripe on web — that's why you don't see a "Cancel" button inside Our Life.

  • iOS: open Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions → Our Life → Cancel Subscription. Or in the app, Settings → Plus → "Manage subscription" opens Apple's panel directly.
  • Web/Stripe: Settings → Plus → "Manage billing" opens your Stripe billing portal.

You keep Plus access through the end of the period you've paid for, then it reverts to free. Nothing is deleted — your data stays put.

Can I get a refund?

iOS purchases are refunded by Apple — visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, find the Our Life purchase and request a refund. Apple usually responds in 1-3 days.

Stripe/web purchases — email support@ourlifeapp.ai with your family code and we'll handle it.

I bought Founders' Lifetime — what does that include forever?

Everything in Plus, plus every Plus feature we ship in the future, for as long as Our Life exists. You will never pay us again. Lifetime seats are capped at 1,000 — once they're gone, the offer disappears permanently and only monthly/yearly remain.

Privacy & data

What data do you actually collect on me?

Far less than typical apps. We collect only what you type or take photos of inside Our Life — appointments, lists, meals, recipes, member names, family photos. We don't require an email or phone number to start. We don't sell data to anyone. We never use your content to train AI models.

Can I export all my data?

Yes. Settings → About → Export family data. You'll get a JSON file with every appointment, list, member, recipe, and photo reference associated with your family code. Useful if you want a backup or are evaluating a move.

How do I delete my entire family from Our Life?

The cleanest path: remove all members from the Family screen. Once the family has zero members, the doc is purged during the next cleanup pass.

Need an immediate hard delete? Email support@ourlifeapp.ai with your family code and we'll delete it the same day.

Troubleshooting

Notifications aren't arriving on my iPhone.

Three things to check, in order:

  • On your iPhone: Settings → Notifications → Our Life — "Allow Notifications" must be on, and "Lock Screen / Notification Center / Banners" should all be checked.
  • Inside Our Life: Settings → Notifications — the master toggle must be on, and the specific notification type (reminders, sitter alerts, etc.) must be enabled.
  • Force-quit Our Life and reopen it once. Push tokens occasionally need a refresh after iOS updates.
The app is slow / not syncing.

Pull down on the Today screen to force a manual sync. If the green "synced" dot next to the family code stays gray, your device may have lost network access — toggle airplane mode off and on.

If it persists across multiple devices in your family, check status.ourlifeapp.ai (or email us — we may already be investigating).

I lost my family code.

If you have at least one device that's still signed into the family, you can find the code at the top of the Family screen.

If every device has been wiped, email support@ourlifeapp.ai with a few details that prove you set up the family (member names, when you started, anything distinctive) and we'll do our best to help you recover.

I'm using a screen reader / I need bigger text.

Settings → Voice & accessibility includes:

  • A 4-step text size scale (Compact / Default / Comfy / Large) that resizes every element across the app.
  • A Reduce motion toggle that silences animations, confetti, and slide-ins — independent of your phone's system setting.

VoiceOver and TalkBack are fully supported. Every interactive element ships with a proper accessibility label.
